African Influences on the Language and Culture of Mexico
Keywords:
slavery, africanisms, afro-mexicanAbstract
Much is said about Mexico’s diversity and the role played by the blending of Spanish and Indigenous cultures, but it is not always acknowledged that other factors contributed to the richness of this mixture. One of these factors is the influence of African culture, brought to New Spain through slavery, which had implications across various spheres of life: social, cultural, religious, and, of course, linguistic. This text offers an overview of some of the most significant events related to slavery in Mexico and the consequences it brought.
