Abstract

This microessay explores how cell regeneration could inform therapeutic solutions in regenerative medicine. It reviews the classification of cells by potency—from totipotent to unipotent, including mesenchymal stem cells—and the trauma-triggered regeneration process, in which signaling, regulatory elements, immune cells, fibroblasts and epigenetic memory coordinate tissue repair. It notes that regenerative capacity varies across species and highlights mesenchymal stem cells, for their sources and immunomodulatory properties, as the most promising tool for healing damaged tissues in human and veterinary medicine.
