Abstract

This microessay explores how the early twentieth-century avant-garde movements broke with traditional ways of making art. It situates their emergence in the tension and war of the period and explains that the avant-gardes questioned the bourgeois canon and expanded what could be considered art. Through Dadaism, Surrealism, Fauvism, Cubism, Futurism and Expressionism, it shows that art shifted from a merely visual stimulus to an intellectual and critical one, revealing its conceptual nature: a work is art by virtue of its meaning.
