Abstract

This microessay reflects on how applying argumentative virtues to opposing viewpoints shapes one’s understanding of disagreement and the quality of one’s responses. Drawing on Gascón (2017) and Aberdein, it links argumentation to virtue ethics and presents Cohen’s four cardinal virtues—willingness to modify, listen, question and engage—together with intellectual virtues such as courage and humility. It argues that arguing virtuously helps one grasp why others disagree and respond more coherently and respectfully, avoiding fallacies and becoming both a better arguer and a better person.
