Abstract

This review discusses Fahrenheit 451, Ray Bradbury’s dystopian novel, and its critique of mass media and of people’s disconnection from the real world, nature and independent thought. Following Montag—a fireman who burns books and comes to question his world of screens and permanent war—the author reflects on the power of media to divert attention from what matters and on knowledge as a means of control. She recommends the book, especially to young readers, for its relevance in the face of advancing ignorance.
